Amongst the kerfuffle inside Westminster over the last week, you might have missed the King’s Speech outlining UK Government legislation coming forward to tackle the many challenges we face.
The world is volatile and too many families are struggling with the cost of living. That means providing long-term answers. The Bills contained in the King’s Speech will protect families, rebuild public services and prepare our country for a more uncertain world.
Since the General Election, this Labour Government has begun the work of change it was elected to deliver following fourteen years of Tory failure.
We’ve already passed 50 pieces of legislation including the biggest upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation, creating a publicly owned body to improve rail services and establishing GB Energy to bring clean energy and cheaper bills to consumers and industry.
We’re lifting 450,000 children out of poverty by removing the two-child benefit cap and are busy tackling violence against women and girls, anti-social behaviour and retail crime.
We now need to go further and faster. That is what the King’s Speech will deliver.
We’ll introduce bills covering Commonhold and Leaseholders’ Rights, Steel and Clean Water. We’re adopting an industrial strategy to create jobs, an economic plan to drive down inflation and interest rates and we’ll protect critical industries too.
The Energy Independence Bill will strengthen us against energy price shocks and help us get off the oil price rollercoaster. There are also bills strengthening National Security, Cyber Security and the Armed Forces, as well as our Immigration and Asylum systems. And we’ll reform the state to create a fairer society that lifts living standards and widens opportunity.
Along the way, we’ll level with the public about trade-offs and investments we need to make. There are no silver bullets, but the future can and must be better.
