The UK Labour Government has today confirmed its plans to invest an extra £20m over the next 10 years into Tyisha, Glanymor and Llanelli Town Centre as part of its nationwide Pride in Place Programme.
Llanelli has been selected as one of nine target areas across Wales to be part of the scheme designed to help neighbourhoods to get back on their feet, rebuild community spirit and give local people a sense of pride in where they live and work.
Dame Nia Griffith, Member of Parliament for Llanelli, who helped to gain the funding for Llanelli said:
“I am pleased to have been able to secure this additional £20m of long-term investment for Llanelli which these communities can now use to address issues that they raise with me day-in, day-out.
It will be for the people who live there to decide how this money will be spent, based on what they feel is most important whether it be improving the places that their families live, work and grow up in, supporting better local facilities and community organisations, helping people access skills and training or making our streets safer, cleaner and more welcoming.
These are communities that feel they have been overlooked for far too long and this will give them the power to make a difference on what matters to them, their families and their neighbours.”
Under the Pride in Place Programme, local people will decide the priorities and how the money will be spent and a new Neighbourhood Board consisting of council representatives, the area’s MP Dame Nia Griffith, residents, community leaders and local businesses will be established shortly to oversee the project.
“I can’t stress enough how important it will be for everyone living and working in these areas as well as the wider Llanelli community who want to help revive our town centre to make their voices heard over the next few months on how this money will be spent. I will be insisting residents are involved in the decision-making process throughout so that it properly reflects their needs and delivers the improvements and the fair deal they rightfully deserve.”
The neighbourhood area for the investment will include Tyisha and parts of Glanymor, Bigyn, Elli and Lliedi. Essentially, it includes Tyisha and the core of Glanymor, plus Llanelli town centre. Combined, the area had a population of 13,810 at the time of the 2021 census.
