For my Christmas card design competition this year, pupils were asked to design a card on the theme of ‘a very Llanelli Christmas’ featuring Llanelli or the surrounding towns and villages where they live.

With over 500 entries from schools across the area, picking the winners was no easy task for the judges who were Gaynor Churchill Craft Group leader, Christine Davies TATA Steel and Juliet Thomas-Davies from Ann Street Post Office.

The winner of the junior category was Georgia Taylor from Ysgol y Castell whose card featured Kidwelly Castle, Burry Port Lighthouse, Parc Howard and Parc y Scarlets, and the winner of the infant category was Sam Harrison, whose design featured a Christmas scene at Swiss Valley reservoir.

The runners up were Brodie Evans Ysgol Glanyfferi, Jake Davies Ysgol Heol Goffa, Faith Davies Ysgol Bryn Teg, Isla Reilly Ysgol y Bryn, Noah Phillips Ysgol y Felin, Ashton Davies Ysgol Pum Heol, Maggie Morley Ysgol y Felin, Lily Hughes-Pickett Ysgol y Bryn, Ayda Brielle-Lewis Swiss Valley Primary School,  Eliot Powell Ysgol Brynsierfel, Anna Beer Ysgol y Castell, Aneurin Bevan Swiss Valley Primary School and Sara Hickman Ysgol Pum Heol.

Their pictures are now on display in Llanelly House until Christmas.

The winners receive a framed copy of their pictures, with cash prizes for their schools, and all winners and runners -up also receive a small gift of art materials to encourage them to keep drawing.

It was a real pleasure to look at all the designs, as the children made an excellent job of celebrating the local area with cards featuring our sporting heritage, historic monuments like Kidwelly Castle, buildings in the town centre including Llanelly House, the library, the Town Hall, Theatr Ffwrnes and the Eastgate as well as the market, important industrial buildings like Felinfoel Brewery and TATA Steel, events like Llanelli Christmas Carnival and glorious views of Burry Port Lighthouse and across the estuary to the Gower and Llansteffan Castle and more. I would like to thank all the staff who encouraged their pupils to take part, as well as the judges for their hard work and Llanelly House for hosting the display.
