The Trostre plant remains heavily reliant on steel supplied directly from the blast furnace process in Port Talbot.  I have already spoken with the Secretary of State for Wales calling on him to guarantee that this deal will not affect the quality and grade of steel currently supplied to Trostre from there and that local jobs here in Llanelli are not being put at risk as a result.

I will be following this up urgently with other Conservative UK Government Ministers in Parliament too.

The need to produce cleaner, greener steel is clear but this looks like an opportunity lost.

No consultation with workers, little consideration of alternative technologies and a crucial lack of detail on how Tata Steel and the wider UK industry can move forward in a smoother transition is a worrying precedent.
