I’d like to say a huge thank you to the emergency services and all those involved in responding to the major incident in Llangennech late last night, and I am very relieved to hear that the train crew were unhurt and that no residents have been injured.

Of course, we will not know what caused this dreadful incident until the investigation is carried out, but, in the meantime, I have asked Network Rail for reassurances about the safety of the track right along the coastline, from Llangennech round to Kidwelly and beyond, because sections of the coast are very exposed, and we have experienced gale force winds, torrential rain and very high tides this past week.

I am also asking what extra precautions can be taken to reassure people whose homes are much closer to the railway than those that were affected in Llangennech.

My other big concern is about pollution of the estuary; we are currently waiting for Natural Resources Wales to be able to make an assessment, and then we need maximum effort to try and minimise the damage.
