I attended an important meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on MND this week to discuss the problems caused by the fact that only those with a life expectancy of 6 months or less qualify for the Special Rules for Terminal Illness (SRTI)’s fast-track process. This means that people who receive the devastating diagnosis of an unpredictable terminal illness like MND can face distressing assessments and lengthy waits for benefits. Although the government announced a review back last July, there is little sign of progress, so we will keep the pressure up on ministers to show some compassion, change the rules and get financial support to MND sufferers as quickly as possible.
