Nia Griffith MP had the pleasure of meeting the winners of her Christmas card competition when she visited their respective schools Burry Port Primary School and Ysgol Gymraeg Dewi Sant. Commenting on the competition Nia Griffith said:
“Warmest congratulations to the two winners – Gwenno Leri Owen in the Infant category and Katie Roberts for the Juniors. The cards made from their designs look great – and many people have already complimented them. Well done to all the pupils who took part. I have seen many really good designs this year, and I know that the judges had a very difficult time choosing out of so many excellent cards. I would like to thank all those involved, the staff in the schools, the judges, all the pupils who took part, Fay Hampson who helps me organise the competition, and the staff in Llanelly House for all their help in setting up the display of the best entries there.”
The competition was to produce a design suitable for Nia to use on her Christmas cards, with prizes of £100 for the school of the winning pupil and prizes for the winning pupils and runners-up. The originals of the winning pictures have been framed for the pupils to keep. The competition was open to local primary schools and attracted over a thousand entries. The theme for this year’s competition was Big Ben at Christmas.
The very difficult job of judging the entries was undertaken by Terry Morris, photographer, Clive Martin, proprietor of In the Frame picture framing shop, and Morgan Ward, Manager of Llanelly House and Joanna Jones, Assistant Manager of Llanelly House. The winning design is shown on the front of the card, and the runners-up have their designs featured as thumbnails on the back of the card.
Katie Roberts of Burry Port Primary School won the Junior category and GwennoLeri Owen of Ysgol Gymraeg Dewi Sant won the Infant category and their designs will be used on the MP’s Christmas Cards.
The runners up in the Junior category were Bobbie Edwards of Ysgol y Castell, Paige Morris of Ysgol Gymraeg Dewi Sant, Rhiannon Purdue of Ysgol Gymraeg Dewi Sant, Rhiannon Lawson of Parc y Tywyn and in the Infant category ZuzannaPiechota of Copperworks Infant School, Isabella Macpherson of Old Road School, Phoebe McShane – Ysgol Gymraeg Dewi Sant and Kieron Hayward of Ysgol y Felin.
As well as the winners and runners-up, entries that were placed in the commended, highly commended and very highly commended categories are on display from 28th November until Christmas in Llanelly House, Bridge Street (opposite the Parish Church), Llanelli. The Christmas card display is on the ground floor where there is no charge for admittance.
