On Sunday 16th March Nia Griffith MP had the honour of starting the first ever Battle of the Beach, a race for cyclists which took place in Pembrey Country Park. Although it was the first time that this race has been organised, it attracted some 300 riders including participants from Belgium and the Netherlands. The route consisted of some 40km ( 25 miles) made up of 3 laps of 13km, which each included 3 km along the beach.
Commenting on the event, Nia said
“It was a real honour to welcome riders from far and wide and to fire the starting gun for this race. I would like to thank the organisers for choosing Pembrey Country Park, with its fantastic range of terrain, forest, beach and grassland, and for all the work they put in to get this event up and running. They wisely gave riders a last minute warning to watch out for people and dogs, as the park remained open to the public throughout the race. This event just goes to show what tremendous potential Pembrey Country Park has, and I very much hope that Carmarthenshire County Council will encourage more such events to use the park.”
