Nia Griffith MP and Keith Davies AM were pleased to join with Lesley Griffiths AM, Minister for Local Government and Council Leader Kevin Madge on the Minister’ s visit to the Beacon in Dafen. The Beacon ( formerly the Technium ) has been taken over by Carmarthenshire County Council as part of their regeneration programme. There the County’s Matt Morden and Bridget Moseley from Coleg Sir Gar highlighted the apprenticeship opportunities that have been created locally in the public sector, with the fire service, the police and various departments in the County Council, ranging from vehicle maintenance to theatre technicians. Then Mickiela Chesters, who has recently taken up one such apprenticeship opportunity discussed the scheme with the Minister, and the other visitors.
Commenting on the scheme, Nia Griffith MP said,
“What young people want is a chance to get on the job ladder and learn the sort of transferable skills that will be really useful in helping them secure jobs in the future. With only 2% of apprenticeships in the public sector, more opportunities could be identified, and this initiative is an excellent start to a scheme, which, I hope, will expand to give increasing numbers of young people these opportunities.”
