Along with neighbouring Labour MPs Geraint Davies, Siân James and Martin Caton, Nia has visited the Remploy factory in Fforestfach, where people from all round the area work. Nia explained:
“We met union officials who told us about Government plans to close down Remploy factories; there seems to be very little attempt to market their excellent quality furniture, which compares well with other private sector firms. Instead they are trying to reduce Remploy to an employment agency which tries to find work for people, rather than running factories. In the factory we saw a prototype fireplace that a big DIY chain is interested in, as well as office and hospital furniture. If the government is serious about growth in the economy, it should be making use of the considerable investment in the machinery at Fforestfach to help Remploy expand, rather than pushing more people out to chase a diminishing pool of jobs. We will be campaigning hard to keep the factory open.”
