Nia Griffith MP has been out with Young Labour members as part of a nationwide campaign calling for a freeze on energy prices.

Explaining the campaign, Nia Griffith said

“It is an utter disgrace that, with winter fast coming upon us, the Prime Minister is doing nothing to prevent the massive 8% price hike that SSE (which includes Swalec) will hit customers with from today. This is on top of Swalec doubling its standing charge between September 2011 and October 2012 meaning that customers now pay a standing charge of £100 a year for their electricity and an additional £100 a year should they also get their gas from Swalec. That Ofgem has even allowed these increases tells you exactly why we need a tough new regulator. Labour’s proposals are not just about a price freeze, but include a tough new regulator, and breaking up the energy market to deliver cheaper prices for consumers. But the Prime Minister could act now and freeze to help householders who are struggling to pay their bills.”
