Home > News > MP demands better government inspection of food labelling

Questioning Owen Paterson MP, the Secretary of State for the Environment, on the continuing horsemeat scandal, Nia Griffith MP said

“It is all very well for the Secretary of State to keep repeating that it is retailers and food processors who are responsible for the content of their products, but the public want to know what his government is doing to enforce proper labelling standards. In 2010 this Tory-led government messed about with the responsibility for product labelling, taking it away from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and sharing it between three bodies, the FSA, the Department for Health and the Department for the Environment. The system is clearly not working, so what is the Secretary of State going to do about it? ”
